3 weeks with käthe
sweeties i have been thinking about how to write this piece for a few days now (yeap before even completing part iii) & i keep starting & deleting because everything i write sounds like i am trying to wrap something up neatly & truth is i can’t wrap this up neatly because käthe is still living in my head & i do naut think she is leaving anytime soon.
so i am just going to tell u what happened
i wrote 3 pieces about her. it took more than 3 weeks. i cried more than i expected. i checked & rechecked everything because i did naut want to tell u internet’s version of her, i wanted to tell u her & those r two very different things darlings & thee distance between them took time to cross. i went to sleep thinking about her. i woke up thinking about her. i would be in the middle of something completely unrelated & suddenly i would remember that she knelt beside a stone version of herself at her son’s grave then stood up, went home, kept working & i would have to stop whatever i was doing. sit with that for a while!!
i do naut know how to explain what spending these weeks inside someone’s life does to u. it is naut like reading about them. it is something closer to living alongside them, watching them make decisions, watching things get taken from them, watching them pick up their tools anyway. & by thee end of it käthe felt less like a historical figure & more like someone i had been sitting with in a room. someone whose face i knew. someone i knew. may be don’t know…….. who knows!!
here r these three pieces sweeties. if u r coming to käthe for thee first time, start with part 1 & let her find u similarly as she found me. if u have already read them, i hope coming back gives u something u missed first time
Part I
a girl who drew everything
Her name was käthe schmidt & she was five years old when someone first put charcoal in her hands.
Part II
Part III
she drew her own face
Why does a woman who has had everything taken from her keep drawing her own face?
sweeties käthe kollwitz died eight days before the war ended in two rooms in a town she did naut grow up in with almost nothing left.
& here u r reading about her in 2026!!
& here i am still thinking about her at whatever time it is while i write this.
she kept drawing. i keep writing. u keep reading.
i think that is the whole thing💚💚💚
sweeties if this story gave u something, pass it to ur sweeties
💚💚💚
& i want to say one last thing to u sweetie
i love you
❤️
